How To Pick A Niche For Your Blog

Choosing a niche for your blog can be one of the most treacherous steps on your road to blogging success. You want to pick a niche that profitable, isn’t over-saturated, and one that might actually get some eyeballs going to it. Far too many people give up their dream of having a successful blog because they feel their idea is either already done, or too obscure. This post will give you some helpful tips that you’ll need to get over that first pesky step toward starting your own blog.

Pick what you know

When you are thinking of how to pick a niche for your blog start with what you know or what you are willing to learn. It might sound cliché, but it is actually the best advice you can get. When you are starting a blog, you are attempting to show the world your expertise. You want to become a person who the world comes to for information. The best way to do this is show them what you already know.

If you are one of those self-doubters (don’t worry, I am one of you) then don’t fret. You can always pick something you aren’t already an expert in. The difference with going this route is that you will need to put in a lot of work to learn the ins and outs of your subject.

Don’t go too obscure

The second important lesson when trying to decide how to pick a niche for your blog is to not It’s good to have a niche, but if you go for a topic that doesn’t have any interest then you won’t be getting any traffic to your site. The trick is to find that sweet spot between over saturated and something that no one cares about. One of the best ways to figure this out is to use keyword searches and other seo tools. This will be covered in a future post.

Picking a popular topic isn’t a terrible idea

Just because you want to write on something that has a lot of competition doesn’t mean you will fail. The trick is, you need to hone in on something very specific in that topic. Want to write about food? Great! Just write about a certain kind of food, or food in a specific place or of a specific culture. Don’t give up on a passion just because other people are doing it, just find an exciting sub-topic or approach that none of your competitor have done.

So don’t fret with trying to figure out how to pick a niche for your blog. Let this process be a fun one. One that requires work but a fun one nevertheless.

Why Your Website Needs A Blog

If your website doesn’t already have a blog, it sorely needs one.

Blogs are effective tools for drawing eyeballs to your site, and customers to your business. Even if you aren’t a dedicated blog you can benefit from having one. There are three reasons for this: blogs drive traffic to your site, blogs can be easily monetized, and blogs have a beneficial impact on your search engine ranking.

Drive Traffic

One of the most important things when building a website is ensuring it is optimized for search engines. This means when someone puts  information and or keywords into the search bar, you are the one with enough of the right keywords to come up on top. It can be difficult to squeeze all those keywords in to your site content, and that’s where blogs come in.

Blogs will draw people to your site that might not have otherwise seen it. For example, if you are selling an e-book, then a blog will be able to help attract customers from around the world looking for authoritative answers to your questions. You have already established yourself as an expert on a topic, and a blog will allow you to continue to build on that.

Affiliate Links

Affiliate links are the answer to the question: how do I monetize my blog? So to continue with the example above, if you are selling an e-book and are looking to help improve the bottom line, then a blog that incorporates affiliate links is the best way to do it.

Affiliate links are links to products. If your customers or website visitors click on those links and purchase the item you have linked to, you receive a commission. With the e-book example, people come to you for your knowledge and expertise, and your product embodies those values. If you have a blog on your site that incorporates affiliate links, you can use the authority you command to recommend products to your customers, and have thus diversified your business.

Google Ranking

If there’s one thing search engines love, it’s new content. If you have a website and it hasn’t been updated in a while, chances are your search engine result position is suffering because of it. Rather than undertaking a total redesign and revitalization of your domain, simply including a blog that is updated what a certain degree of regularity will help improve your position.

Blogs are excellent tools and resources for your business. You don't have to post something everyday, but a consistent if sporadic upload schedule will produce results.
