Popcorn And Milk For Breakfast? It’s Not So Crazy.

Popcorn and milk are two things you might have never expected to see together. Well, I'm here to throw some cold water on you and tell you that it is more than just some weird picture you see online. It's actually something people eat, and has quite the tradition in continental North America.  Popcorn and milk was a popular breakfast food over a century ago.

The first known references to a popcorn and milk breakfast goes all the way back to the 1850s and Laura Ingall Wilder’s Farmer Boy. Ingall Wilder described a mind twister you could make out of your breakfast: “You can fill a glass to the brim with milk and fill another glass of the same size brim full of popcorn, and then you can put all the popcorn kernel by kernel into the milk and the milk will not run over. You cannot do this with bread. Popcorn and milk are the only two things that will go into the same place. Then, too, they are good to eat.”

The popcorn and milk breakfast might seem a little strange to our modern tastes, but if we think about it a little more it might not be so strange afterall.

Most of the breakfast foods we eat now are some form of popped or puffed rice. Cereals like Special K and Rice Krispies are two examples of puffed rice cereals.

So it's not so outlandish to eat popped or puffed corn, when we are still eating the same style of food nowadays.

So if you are looking for a breakfast that is a little bit rustic, historical, and a conversation starter then try popcorn and milk.
